Traveling to Saariselkä and Lapland in Finland

 

The village of Saariselkä is nestled in an enchanting valet in Finnish Lapland, which is situated 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Long a popular winter-sports center, visitors will find a number of excellent ski resorts in the villae. Kaunispää and Iisakkipää in particular are great places to ski, as they have ski lifts and a large number of slopes suitable for skiiers of all levels.

Winter-sports enthusiasts will also find a number of other ways to have fun while soaking up the stunning scenery of Saariselkä and the surrounding area. Cross-country skiing can be a lot of fun, while hiking through the area is another way to view the local flora and fauna. Sledging is a popular activity among families and there are a number of different trails to follow. One of the most challenging and invigorating is the track that runs for 1.5kms from Kaunispää. However, visitors will need nerves of steel and a strong grip to successfully complete this trail, as sharp bends and the steep gradient can be hair-raising at times.

A large number of people also travel to Saariselkä to enjoy the spectacular sight of the Northern Lights. This all-natural light display is at its most vibrant between November and March and is an unforgettable experience that should not be missed. Private local guides are available to take visitors to the best viewing sights so that they can really get the most out of this enchanting experience.

People who are travelling with children will no doubt enjoy a trip to meet with Santa and his elves in his magical home in Lapland. Saint Nick can be found in a secluded log cabin in the woods on the outskirts of Saariselkä and visitors reach his village via a special snowmobile sleigh ride. Once there families are offered the chance to have a private audience with him and spend the night in one of the igloos that have been built by his elves, which is a magical experience that people of all ages can enjoy. But three and four star accommodations are also available for visitors who like their creature comforts.

Taking a husky safari is another great way to explore this part of the world and this is a particularly popular experience with couples who travel to Saariselkä for a romantic break. Reindeer-pulled sleigh rides are also popular, especially among children, and this is a great way to get into the festive spirit during the Christmas season.
