Question: President Obama’s administration is going to propose amendments to the Antarctic Treaty at a conference today. They’re seeking to not only mandate the treaty under international law instead of its current state of voluntary enforcement, but they will also be pushing to limit tourism to the continent in an effort to make sure operators comply with strict environmental regulations.

Air Tours

  • Adventure Network International -Operating an Ilyushin 76 from Punta Arenas in Chile to its base camp at Patriot Hills, it also has two Twin Otters and a Cessna 185 in the interior, a region seldom seen by anyone other than professional adventurers and members of scientific expeditions.
  • DAP Antarctica - DAP Antarctica is an airline with more than 23 years operating in Patagonia. It was the first airline to provide regular commercial flights to the Antarctic in 1987.
  • LAN Airlines - LAN Airlines has developed a specific program dedicated to Antarctica. This program consists mainly of charter flights from Santiago to Ushuaia and Mount Pleasant (Stanley, Falkland Islands airport). LAN Airlines also provides guided overflights to the Antarctic region.
  • Helicopters (NZ) Ltd - We have provided helicopter support to various International Governments and Private Expeditions to the Antarctic.

Cruises

  • Abercrombie & Kent / Atholl Shipping Corporation - the 'Explorer II' (formerly the M/S 'Minerva'), an ice-reinforced vessel carrying 198 passengers. The "Explorer II" is a luxurious vessel with cabin sizes ranging from 150 square feet to 350 sq. feet including suites with private balconies. The vessel carries a fleet of Zodiac landing craft and an experienced crew. All departures are accompanied by a team of naturalists and lecturers. Abercrombie & Kent, the parent company of Atholl Shipping Corporation, offers voyages to Antarctica, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia each season from November to March.
  • Antarctic Shipping S.A. - Its companies headquarters in the city of Santiago and the operational management in the city of Punta Arenas. From there we sail all our expeditions to the Antarctic with excellent cruising in icy conditions, equipped with modern systems.
