fArts Factory Lodge
Byron Bay, New South Wales

Travelers Digest 2002 Review

Travelers Digest toured the Pacific, including Australia, for an entire year, searching for the best tours, lodging, scenery, beaches, hot spots, party towns and for anything that was either wild, beautiful or uniquely interesting. Boy" did we have our hands full.....The entire country is a Disneyland of nature on steroids.....Wild and gentle at the same time, but instantly inspiring.

Visiting Byron Bay is like stepping back in time to the days of the flower children, or the 'counter culture'. The town has preserved much of the original creativity and peaceful ambiance introduced in the 1970's by both local and international artists as well as traveling hippies. The heart of Byron Bay lies in The Arts Factory Lodge, which is something between a fairytale and peace movement camp. A good place to explore the inner self, meet other worldly drifters and catch up on global gossip.

The lodge has its own restaurant, which boasts a full and diverse menu, as well as tasty vegetarian dishes. There is a cinema, with floor cushions instead of the  usual seats, an internet cafe, game room with pool tables, volleyball court, table tennis and even a pizzeria. They have an Aboriginal culture show and so much more, you'll just have to check it out for yourself. The location is prime real estate, acre's of flora, a mystic swamp, intertwining tree's that enhance the privacy. The lodge it is only a 5 minute walk from the town, which is a mini Haight Ashbury. A replica of the "make love, not war" days.

My staff and I were fortunate to stay at the Arts Factory during the night of their talent show. We were amazed at the level of talent. The stage was behind the main building, next to the creek that ran through the complex. The various lodging consisted of the main building with bed rooms, bathrooms, and outside a mixture of Indian Teepee's, an old painted bus and countless tents scattered in and around the grounds. Tables and open pit cooking added even more atmosphere to this unique environment. If you want to prepare your own meals, they do have a kitchen. There's computers for your email, a bar, cafe and for lounging or swimming, there's even a good size pool. I can't remember the last time I was so pleasantly surprised by any lodge, anywhere. A good experience and I fully recommend "The Art's Factory." Check it out!
