Travelers Digest 2002 Review

Travelers Digest sends its crews to every corner of the globe to discover the many aspirations this beautiful world has to offer and these we share with you, our readers.

In the opinion of our touring staff, in which I am one, Australia is a land that I could spend my life wandering. The land down under is full of beautiful, diverse creations of nature and I feel at a lost for words when trying to describe it. One such place is a small town on the east coast, Port Macquarie.

We left the gorgeous city of Sydney, driving north along this wonderland of the east coast of Australia. Our next review was in the port town of Port Macquarie. I didn't know much about this area as there was not a lot of data in the world's travel almanac, but I as an ultimate lover of adventure, I was anxious to learn more. The drive of many hours left us tired and as well reached the town we were quick to find our destination. We were booked to stay at the Beachside Holiday Apts. The name and the fact that is was Apartments, reassured me that this should be quality lodging. As we pulled into the driveway, I was assured.

We were greeted by the residential managers, Jill and Maurice Henderson. Being Australians, they were gracious and welcoming as they showed us to our apartment. After asking several times if everything was appropriate, they left so we could unpack and relax. The unit was huge and totally furnished right down to the towels and dishes. They had even provided us with coffee, tea, a brewer, sugar, milk and all the goodies for morning caffeine. The beds were firm and beckoning and it wasn't long before we were lulled to sleep by the refreshing ocean breezes coming in through the open windows.

The next morning, we strolled along the secluded beach and discovered a well received treasure, a reclusive and charming cafe sitting right on the waters edge. At one of their many outside tables we had a good breakfast and after we were rested and well fed. Now, it was time to explore the bay and then wander around downtown, which was only a few kilometers away. The town itself was openly built along the port. It was home to countless small shops and cafe's, no huge malls here. Thank goodness! Soon we stumbled across a jazzy bar with deep southern Blues pouring from its open balconies and porches. I am from the south of Texas and there's not much I appreciate more than some good blues, so we stayed away.

liked the town, it's easy going people, it's quite location and most definitely our lodging..... The Beachside Holiday Apts. The building was beautifully landscaped with native tree's and flora. In the center of it all was a large and very enticing pool.

When you do decide to take the trip of your life, come to Australia, rent a car and drive the east coast, up or down, but whatever you do, stop and spend a little time in this peaceful bay town and while you're here, stay at the Beachside Holiday Apts. The hosts and the entire experience will reward you with spiritual and physical rejuvenation. Travelers Digest toured this location and the Beachside Holiday Apts. in July 2002. We loved the peace, the accommodations and the people we were fortunate to have met in this little town of Port Macquarie. Say hi for us!
