Tips, advice, & general musings about travelling in China

Beware of unscrupulous taxi drivers
Especially around Beijing there are rampant cases of taxis having rigged the
meter to rise exponentially. Do not get in any taxis that aren’t properly
marked, & always keep an eye on the meter, if you feel like it’s rising too fast
ask the driver to stop before you the situation (& the fare) gets out of
control.
Ni hao
No one speaks English here, no really it truly is rare to find someone with
whom you can converse.
The absence of diet cola
China seems to be lacking in the one addiction that every pseudo-cool person
has, Diet Coke! It's a very difficult find on the streets of Beijing or many
other Chinese cities. Even good ole trust capitalistic McDonald's doesn't have
Diet Coke! Then again they don't even have Egg McMuffins at McDonald's here, but
they have time to make orange pies. Okay I officially think this is bothering me too much.
Man
the Forbidden City is big
No really, it's huge! It takes forever to walk around that place, it has to be
two miles long, how many gates of supreme heavenly awesomeness did the emperors
really need?
Tips on using the internet in China
I hate China, or at least using the internet
in China. As every avid internet user to visit China will quickly find out;
censorship plays a large role in your everyday browsing while inside the
country. If the Chinese government deems the content of a page unsuitable for
its citizenry the page will simply not show up & you'll get a "page cannot be
displayed" notice.
There is however a way to get around this most inconvenient of problems. If
you use a free online proxy server to browse it'll mask your IP address &
allow you to access all the websites you normally would. Personally I
recommend Proxify.com
