Baron Island, Spain

 Location:
A unique opportunity to enjoy a very discrete private holiday island known as Baron Island. Situated off the southern mediterranean coast of Spain (Provincia de Murcia) in the Mar Menor near the ancient port town of Cartagena, Baron Island was once a royal hunting reserve of King Amadeo of Saboya. This area has over 3,000 hours of sunshine yearly. Baron Island is a year-round resort, however the month of August is always reserved for the owners.

 Surrounding:
This 220-acre island is also home to a castellated hilltop watchtower folly. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, this five storey circular tower is available to guests. Built in the 1950's with beautiful views of the volcanic island this wonderful folly has circular rooms. The island is a nature and wildlife reserve with hilly land covered by a rich variety of original mediterranean vegetation. The highest of its four peaks reaches 330 feet above sea level offering spectacular panoramic views. A number of small beaches around its rocky coastline offer good protection. The salt-water lagoon Mar Menor and La Manga del Mar Menor offer great possibilities for water sports. A great place to completely relax and unwind, truly away from it all - a hidden jewel available for the first time for others to enjoy.

 Accommodation:
Up to 10 adults (7 double rooms) can be accommodated in The Tower, the Cottages and the Hunting Lodge. The Cottages and the Hunting Lodge are typically Mediterranean in style, painted in indigo blue and terracotta colours, with simple but extremely charming rustic interiors, terra cotta tiled floors and wood beamed ceilings, barbecue area, and are situated only 50 yards from the main beach. The Hunting Lodge is adjacent to the Cottages and has indoor dining tables and lounge area, kitchen, cold storage. The Tower has 3 bedrooms with bathrooms, 2 lounges and kitchenette spread over 5 floors. The Tower is not located direct on the coast (see photos)--it is a 20 minute walk to the beach.

Extra domestic help such as cooks, maids, nanies, etc. can be arranged for your stay. The island is self-supporting in respect of solar power electricity, running water and has direct dial telephone. There is no washing machine on the island (washing is done ashore) but fresh linens and towels are provided.

 Dining:

There is also the island shuttle launch, a sailing yacht and a 'Latino' motor-sailer. Guest have available for their use watersports equipment for windsurfing, snorkelling, dinghy/hobiecat sailing, rowing and rod-fishing. All othere water sports and equipment can be ordered. Three championship golf courses are available at the La Manga Golf Club. Murcia, the capitol of this region, is characterized by its old history of commerce and agriculture. Already its original inhabitants, Iberian tribes, established commercial relations with Phoenicians and Greeks. Lateron it became first a Carthaginean colony, then a Roman colony. (Carthago Nova today's Cartagena still reminds of that fact). Cartagena is of great historical importance, specially evident if you visit its museums. It also has the region's most important port. The Moors established effective and modern agricultural production, which still today is an important economic factor, thanks to their advanced technologies. The inland of the coast is arid, and you may visit several towns which still preserve their medieval structures.

 How to get there:
To reach Baron Island, direct or connecting flights to nearby San Javier (Murcia) or Alicante airports, with Island launch transfer from local marina (30 minutes away by boat).
