Ile Chantemesle, France

Only 45 minutes from Paris in "Claude Monet's Country"

 Location:
It's one of the most beautiful places in the Paris region located between La Roche Guyon and Vétheuil. The impressionists were attracted by the beauty of the landscape and the quality of its light. Claude Monet lived there and painted several famous paintings from Vétheuil and the banks of the Seine, and the Waterlilies of his garden of Giverny, just nearby. Other marvels around the island of Chantemesle: the cave-dweller's settlements of Haute-Isle, the XIIth century church of Vétheuil or the Castel of La Roche-Guyon, a Mecca for culture in Val d'Oise. La Roche-Guyon has been classified as one of the 20 most beautiful villages of France.

 Surrounding:
There are about sixty islands on the Seine River also known as "Ile-de-France", the "Marne" and the "Oise". Some of them are wild, some of them are inhabited. The island of Chantemesle is situated at the famous "Route des Crêtes" between Vétheuil and La Roche Guyon's feet. The island of Chantemesle is a small paradise of ca. 25 acres built with 2 charming villas authentic to the region.

 Accommodation: 
Main house has a living room with a big fire place, a dining room, a fully-equipped kitchen, a cloakroom and the Victorian veranda. On the 1st floor there are 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms. On the 2nd floor there are 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. The total living space of the main house is 400 square meteres. The house has central heating. The main house has just been renovated (exterior and interior) and the Victorian veranda has also been beautifully restored. The second house on the island is occupied by the care takers.

 Dining:
French dining is possible at the many fine resturants nearby. Or do your shopping at the local market center and try your hand at French cuisine! Personnel is available for cooking and cleaning services. Please ask us for rates.

 Activities & daytrips:
On the island there is a park, orchard, greehouse, tennis court, a swimming pool, a farmyard, 2 greenhouses, 2 landing stages on each side of the small branch of the Seine and 2 small motorboats. There are 8 golf courses within 1/2 hour as well as horse riding, gliding and water sports. A must is the Claude Monet Foundation (April 1 - Oct 31) and gardens at Giverny, see www.fondation-monet.com, definitely worth a trip. Other places to visit: Vétheuil; La Roche Guyon (village and castle); Amble Villier; Market at Vernon; the Magny en Vexin. Facinating archeological sites such as th eRock Shelters of Mestreville, Covered Alley of Dampsmesnil and the neolithic burial place of Houlbec Cocherel are in the near.

 How to get there:
Only 45 minutes from the "périphérique" Paris. It's a real island: to get there, a small branch of the Seine has to be crossed by boat, a private boat. Also may be reached by train and bus from Paris.
