Melody Key, Florida
Previous Page
Melody Key is a tropical paradise, lush with trees and palms, and surrounded
by warm waters teeming with fish. The sole residence on the island is a
spacious, newly renovated designer three-story contemporary home with 360-degree
views of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.
During your stay, you and your guests will enjoy complete seclusion
and privacy in a supremely relaxing environment. Clothing is
Optional...of course, it's YOUR OWN PRIVATE ISLAND.
Residence
The residence was built in 1995. This unique home consists of two octagonal
structures linked together and surrounded by airy verandahs. At 3,500 square
feet, plus another 1,500 square feet of screened verandahs, the home is both the
largest and newest on any offshore island in the Florida Keys.
Entering the ground floor of the house one finds a large anteroom and a
staircase ascending to the living quarters above. The second floor contains the
three bedrooms. The two guest bedrooms are spacious with beautiful Teak
furnishings and queen size beds, each with their own full bathroom. Glass french
doors lead to an adjoining 12 ft. by 30 ft. balcony that overlooks the pool. The
master bedroom features Teak furnishings with a King size bed and boasts a
luxurious bathroom with whirlpool/jacuzzi/shower combo. Leading out of the glass
french doors is a large private balcony that overlooks the front yard.
With the installation of separate central air-conditioning systems for the
2nd and 3rd floors, guests can choose their comfort level for living and
sleeping quarters and with a full laundry room on the 2nd floor allows guests to
bring less with them to the island.
The house is equipped with every convenience, including clothes washer and
dryer, dishwasher, satellite television, CD player, VCR, Tivo, free wireless
internet, a Hi-Def plasma TV, a state-of-the-art stereo, and DVD. There is also
a small library of DVDs about what is fun to do in the Keys as well as a few
movies that are set in the Keys.
The third floor sports a spacious great room with a 14-foot, beamed ceiling
and a wet bar. The bar tops a magnificent 300 gallon salt water aquarium stocked
with native tropical fish and invertebrates. The dining room offers a
spectacular view of the Atlantic ocean and surrounding islands, combined with
the great room and sprawling balcony with 35 ft. of glass gives you a one of a
kind dining experience. With the unique shape of the house, lounging verandah's
abound, no matter what time of day or night there is a place to relax with a
fabulous view.
The fully equipped gourmet kitchen features large side-by-side refrigerator
island, cook-top with grill, oven, dish- washer and breakfast bar. Just off the
kitchen is a work station that's Wi Fi ready
The kitchen opens onto yet another verandah, which contains a spiral
staircase leading to the “crow's nest” balcony. Up here, four stories
above the island, you can experience superb bird watching, unparalleled
panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, and breathtaking
sunrises and sunsets. The crows nest is the maximum height allowed by law in the
Keys giving it what most consider to be the best panoramic view in the Lower
Keys. Breathtaking is the word most used to describe the 360 degree view.
As spacious as the house is, we restrict its occupancy to a maximum of six
people to ensure the quality of the experience for each guest. The minimum age
for children is sixteen. No children under 21 are allowed without parental
supervision. No pets are permitted on the island.
About
On the island itself, the main barbecue deck (over 700 square feet) seats 10+
at a circular picnic table, protected by another thatched cabana. Sun bathing, “au
naturel” if you like, is a popular activity on the island. Stepping into the
water around the island, you'll find a firm sand bottom ranging in depth from
about two feet near shore to a comfortable depth for swimming and snorkelling
past the dock's end. You'll also find abundant fish, providing endless
opportunities for both sportsmen and nature lovers.
Recreational opportunities abound in the Keys. Many consider Florida to have
the best fishing in the U.S. and there are a variety of boating and diving
options as well. Guided trips for fishing and diving outings are available for a
reasonable fee. Should you wish to venture out to the “mainland” for
shopping, dining, or other services, you're always just a short boat trip
away. Rental of Melody Key includes a 5,000 square foot parcel on nearby
Summerland Key. This parcel is equipped with a seawall to serve as a docking
site and a secure place to park your vehicle. An easy to use 18-foot jetboat is
provided at no extra charge with each rental
Neighbouring Summerland Key is a small, residential community located 25
miles from either Marathon or Key West and 125 miles from Miami. The main road
in the Keys, US 1, crosses Summerland Key, yet every business can easily be
reached by boat via canal. The post office, banks, restaurants, grocery store,
video rental store, hair dresser, gas station, dentist, deep sea and back
country fishing charters, snorkel and scuba diving trips, clothing boutique,
sporting goods and fishing or lobster license vendors - all have docks for
customers arriving by boat.
In 2005, Nick officially changed the name of the island from Money Key to
Melody Key. He said, "I wanted to give the island a name more fitting for what
it is: a piece of paradise."Also, it's a play on words, you know, minor key,
major key, Melody Key. I've written quite a few songs there so it seems to
naturally inspire melodies. Many a couple has gotten married or had their
honeymoon there so I also wanted to have a more romantic name than Money Key.
Melody Key seemed to fit perfectly and luckily Monroe County officials and the
U.S. Geological Service agreed with me and now the name change is official and
permanent!"
While there is some uncertainty of how the island got its old name, Money
Key, according to an article by E.R. Adams published in the Key West Citizen,
July 27, 1969, Money Key "received its name because of Pirate loot found there."
During the 1800s, the Keys were notorious for their lawlessness. Pirating and
smuggling were rampant until Key West was connected to Miami by railway in 1912.
After a fierce hurricane in 1935 the railway was rebuilt into what is now called
the Overseas Highway or US 1.
