Stelio's Place Santorini takes your breath away. There are no words to describe it and no photos or paintings to do it justice. The 200 to 400 meter cliffs were topped with white Greek structures and from the bay the rim of this
ancient volcano appeared to be covered with snow. The entire
scene was beyond my comprehension. In a thousand dreams, I could not have
preconceived this spectacular, but alien landscape. Nor do I have access
to the words required to write of its beauty. A thousand photographs later
we rented a small car and proceeded to drive up the winding and twisting
lane that was precariously clinging to the cliff. In about twenty minutes
we reached the summit of the islands plateau. With glaring eyes of
appreciation and a mind of sheer ecstatic, I had to stop several times and
stare down to the sea as it stroked the shores of this artistic
masterpiece of natures ability. The entire civilized world, with all its
wizardry, could not enhance this fascinating landscape.
The villages of Santorini are built in the only possible location
left by the exploded volcano, the absolute peak. After reaching the top,
we wandered from one side to the other and Perissa Beach was home to Stelio's Place, our hotel of choice. Its subtle tranquility would re-energize us for the long days ahead. There was much to see and do on Santorini and had originally planned only a three day visit, but two weeks later...we were still there and had the privilege of staying at many fine hotels and Stelio's Place was definitely one of them. Before checking in to the hotel...we just had to do some exploring. Driving up the slope to the absolute crest of the island we arrived in the center of the main town and after a few hours headed down toward the area of our hotel and as we drove through the small beach village we were pleased with the many shops, cafes, clubs and restaurants. The beach drive was mostly lined with pubs, clubs and live music bars and when the sun went down that's exactly where we spent our time. The coolness of evening was appreciated along with the gentle surf of this sleepy beachside village.
The days and nights we spent on Santorini were long and tiring. The scenic lure of this island enticed us to continue our exploration every minute of everyday. We were thankful for Stelio's Place and the warm hospitality made available at the end of the day. The comfort of their rooms, the coolness of their pool, their informative discussions about the island and just their warm conversations in general, did much to revitalize our spirits. Welcome to Stelio's and to the beautiful island they call home. A great place, a great hotel and really great people. Where beauty meets tranquility... The Greek Islands!
