Name: Jois
Question: Dakota,
Coming in from the US is it better to go straight to Varna or go to a bigger city and bus\train in? Twenty day trip only. Is late Sept or early Oct still ok for the scene there?
Answer: Well if you’re coming from America most likely you’ll have to fly into the capital Sofia. From there seeing as you have twenty days I would say it’d be best to work your way overland towards Varna & the Black Sea coast. There are some really beautiful places in Bulgaria, I recommend you go to Veliko Turnovo (http://www.travelersdigest.com/veliko_turnovo.htm) in the mountains, it’s a really nice medieval town. People have said it’s the best example of the period’s architecture in Europe.
There is a train that goes from Sofia to Varna & it leaves seven times a day. However there is no train access to Veliko Turnovo. Alternatively long distance coach travel in the country is frequent & relatively cheap.
Sept/Oct should be fine but it’ll be near the end of the season. Keep in mind though that prices may have risen some since I was last there now that the country’s been European Unioned.
