Question: I have a good friend going to HK this weekend for his brother’s wedding. Can you recommend some bars, & clubs for him to go? - Thanks.
Answer: I definitely can, the first thing you should know is there are more or less three districts for nightlife in Hong Kong; Lan Kwai Fong, SoHo, & Wan Chai.
The first one Lan Kwai Fong is located in Central, & is an upper class nightlife district. It’s actually infamous for being one of the world’s most expensive nightlife destinations, & drinks regularly cost around eight-to-ten US Dollars. But that shouldn’t put you off of it, it is also still an amazing experience. Lan Kwai Fong or LKF for short is generally only busy on Friday & Saturday nights. But boy on those nights is it busy! You can hear the roar of the crowd from several blocks away, & the bars always spill onto the surrounding pedestrian streets creating a unique atmosphere. There are dozens of bars/clubs in the area & it’s mostly just a matter of finding what you like. In general the scene is an expatriate one with many people who work in/or around Central. Some of the more exclusive clubs in the area are; Armani Bar, & Volar.

The second place I mentioned is SoHo. It’s located just above Lan Kwai Fong all along Hollywood Road & to the south. SoHo is where the more artistic people go on their nights out. It’s also probably the most expensive nightlife district in Hong Kong with drinks usually costing upwards of nine US Dollars. The bars are more classy & chilled than in the other districts. The area as a whole is a better place to lounge, but there are also some very high-class clubs. Dragon-I comes to mind as does Prive. There are really just so many interesting places, it’s a great part of town in which to have dinner & grab a few drinks with some friends. The street scene is also very happening.

The final place I want to talk about is Wan Chai. Wan Chai is the working man’s nightlife district as the drinks are only around five US Dollars! (Perceptions are distorted by this city.) Wan Chai is home to all sorts of pubs, bars, a few clubs, & is also a quasi red light district. There are normal bars with normal people here, & red light bars/strip clubs that are filled mostly with Southeast Asian prostitutes. It’s probably one of the few places I can think of where the legitimate & the not so legitimate crowds mix so well. While there aren’t as many high-end establishments in this part of town, it’s always a safe bet for a good night on Fridays, Saturdays, & also Wednesdays which is the area’s ‘ladies night’. One of my favourite places in Wan Chai is the bar Typhoon. Another place of interest is the legendary prostitute bar ‘Fenwicks’.
