Train to the Clouds in Salta, Argentina

Name: Steve

Question: When does the ‘Train above the clouds’ run, & does it run in Sept? I heard it leaves on Saturday only? is this true? is there still a cargo train during the week that you can take? Thanks.

Answer: The train will resume service after several years of renovation in August of this year. The train traditionally runs from April to November. During September the train leaves three times a week on Wednesday, Friday & Sunday. The fare is 140USD for the 15 hour round trip tour.

Alternatively you could take the ‘Road to the Top’ in one of the many 4×4 expeditions leaving Salta. You’ll get many of the same views, but you would have more time for stops.

I’ve posted the link to the official website of ‘The Train to the Clouds’ below.

  1. Steve Said,

Thanks for the help. I am not able to get the reservations page to work and sent them an email. Are you pretty sure it runs on Wednesday during September? Have you been to Tucamin which is South of Salta? is it worth a visit?

I have travelled into 26 countries in my lifetime and travel with a TENT. this has saved me tons of money and allows me to have an unlimited budget for food.

  2. Dakota Said,

It says on their website that it runs on Wednesdays in September so that’s what I’m going with. Unfortunately I’ve never been to that part of Argentina so I can’t really give any personal recommendations. I’ve seen pictures of Tucuman before though & it looks quite nice.

  3. Steve Said,

Thanks. I think it said Mon/Wed/Friday in September. Did you see that? Do you have the website saved? Would it be too soon to try to go to Patagonia in late Sept? Will most things be closed down due to off season?

  4. Dakota Said,

I’m seeing that in September it leaves on every Sunday, Wednesday, & Friday.

I saw this on a Patagonian tourism website about the best times to travel,

“To be able to travel safely and enjoy the Patagonian landscape, the best time is (our) summer, between the months of December and March, although this excludes the snow lovers as well as those who do not care about cold but sunny and pristine days.”

If you’re into skiing the winter months might be fine, but I think if you’re going to be staying in a tent you might want to hold off on visiting Patagonia until warmer months.
