Question: I will be taking a train trip from Vancouver, BC to Toronto in last Sept/early Oct, 2009. I will spend a day in Toronto and then would like to see Buffalo and the Falls. Can you provide info on transportation from Toronto to Buffalo, as well as from Buffalo to the Falls and back. I will be renting a car in Buffalo and driving to Lake Placid, but I don’t know if it is advisable to rent the car and drive to the Falls or to use public transportation and wait to rent the car when I am about to leave Buffalo. Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Answer: The easiest way I’ve found to get to Buffalo from Toronto is just to take Greyhound. They have a direct route taking only 2.5 hours and costing 18 Dollars. http://www.greyhound.com/ Alternatively you could also take Amtrak to Buffalo but that would take longer at 4.5 hours.
From Buffalo to Niagara Falls there are three daily trains by Amtrak. The trip is a leisurely 1.3 hours however the earliest train is at 3PM, so that might be a problem if you’re not planning on spending a night in Niagara Falls. http://www.amtrak.com/
If you are planning on staying overnight at Niagara Falls you could stop there on the way from Toronto to Buffalo as it is directly on the route. Otherwise I would say that you might want to consider renting the car and using it to visit the falls.
