Destination of the month - November 2009

Destination of the month: Rajasthan, India. Rajasthan is a state located in the northwestern part of India. It’s primarily a desert region known for its unique culture, historic palaces and forts and its amazing landscape. The state is also home to two national tiger reserves, and several holy sites of the Hindu and Jain religions.

As it is a desert region, visitors to Rajasthan have to be careful to avoid the extreme temperatures. It’s not advised to visit the region during the summer months, with temperatures being most comfortable from October-April. However November is one of the best times to visit Rajasthan as the weather is cool but it’s before the tourist high season which starts in December.

I’ll be in Rajasthan for the entire month of November; I’m making a circular route covering the state in its entirety. I’ll make sure to let everyone know how my trip turns out.

Trans Siberian Railway: From Beijing to Irkutsk

Trans Siberian Railway: From Beijing to Irkutsk
September 2009

The Trans Siberian rail journey has long been a dream of mine. Armed with a surge of confidence and knowledge the optimal season was quick in passing, I decided to travel to Beijing to embark upon the train via Mongolia to Lake Baikal and the city of Irkutsk.

It was September and the weather had been glorious in Beijing, a welcome relief from the sauna that is Hong Kong. September is one of the best times to embark upon the rail journey as the crowds of summer have largely dissipated. I was able to arrange tickets via a specialist travel agency by the name of Monkey Shrine, and after a fun filled week spent with friends in Beijing, I began my journey…

Destination of the month - October 2009

Destination of the month: Sydney, New South Wales. Sydney is a world class city that should be on everyone’s ‘must see’ list of travel destinations. There’s a beautiful harbour, some wonderful beaches, and a vibrant local culture. And October, in the southern hemisphere’s spring, is as good a time as any to visit Sydney.

Vietnam visas on arrival

Vietnam is now issuing visas on arrival to travellers arriving by air to the airports of Da Nang, Hanoi or Saigon. By visiting the website www.visa-vietnam.org/ you can purchase an electronic ‘visa approval letter’ that is then printed out and shown at the visa on arrival desk at one of the previously mentioned airports.

Tourist Hotel, Zhuhai, China

The Tourist Hotel is well maintained and is in a good location in the city of Zhuhai. It’s across the street from a new shopping complex that contains several western food outlets. And it is three blocks or so from the bay. The rooms are standard but I found it to be of good value.

The great firewall of China

I just wanted to provide everyone with an update on the Great Chinese Firewall. It’s been about two years since I’ve last spent any significant time in mainland China, and in the time since it seems that China has gotten immeasurably better at enforcing its draconian internet restrictions. While before one could easily bypass the firewall using any number of free proxy services, China has taken steps to block these sites at a heightened pace.

So for those of you planning on visiting China and wishing to have unfiltered access to the internet (I needs me my Facebook), I suggest you download a proxy program before your arrival in China.
