Trans Siberian Railway: From Beijing to Irkutsk

Trans Siberian Railway: From Beijing to Irkutsk
September 2009

The Trans Siberian rail journey has long been a dream of mine. Armed with a surge of confidence and knowledge the optimal season was quick in passing, I decided to travel to Beijing to embark upon the train via Mongolia to Lake Baikal and the city of Irkutsk.

It was September and the weather had been glorious in Beijing, a welcome relief from the sauna that is Hong Kong. September is one of the best times to embark upon the rail journey as the crowds of summer have largely dissipated. I was able to arrange tickets via a specialist travel agency by the name of Monkey Shrine, and after a fun filled week spent with friends in Beijing, I began my journey…

Destination of the month - September 2009

Destination of the month: Trans-Siberian Railway. There’s not a better time than September to embark upon this epic rail journey. This is the magic hour after the heat of summer but before the chilling cold of the Russian winter.

The Trans-Siberian journey can be taken many ways, I personally would recommend taking the trans-Mongolian route from Moscow to Beijing. You’ll get to see most of the highlights of the Russian trip including Lake Baikal and Irkutsk, but you’ll also get to enjoy the isolation of Mongolia and finish your journey in the orient. The trip takes about one week and transverses over 7,000 km.

Read about my personal experiences on the Trans Siberian.

Transport from the Manchester Airport to Keswick in the Lake District

Name: Moira

Question: Hi! I’m flying to Manchester England June 3 and want to go from the airport to the Lake District, Keswick. I’m having difficulty finding local buses and local train lines. I think a train from the airport and then a bus would work. The one website that seemed helpful has no information past May. Do you have any website suggestions? I’d be able to get the train after 12:30 PM. Thank you!

Destination of the month - May 2009

Destination of the month: Ohrid, Macedonia. While admittedly off the beaten path, Ohrid is a beautiful lakeside town in the Republic of Macedonia. Not known to too many tourists, here you can still find old world charm at bargain bin prices. If you’re a person who enjoys going to places not many others have, this could be your destination.

Check out our website for information on the region and other travel information for Ohrid: http://www.travelersdigest.com/ohrid.htm

Not so EasyJet

The following was sent to me earlier today and it details one woman’s horrid experience with EasyJet. I have to say that the service given by budget airlines from the UK is really poor. People like to make excuses for them saying, ‘you get what you pay for’ and other things along those lines, but that’s really not a fair characterization. The fact is I’ve flown on budget airlines in all parts of the world, and they have all provided better and more courteous service than budget airlines from the UK sphere of influence.

Name: Rachael

Message: I am contacting you regarding easyjet and the way they treated me whilst travelling with them recently. I have had not much luck in getting a decent response from them - having sent 4-5 letters and emails to their customer services department, and all senior members of management. I have had replies to my emails but they always seem to skip past the crucial points - and ultimately in effect unfairly lay the blame on me.

In short - I broke my arm on a snowboarding holiday, and when I came to check in at Lyon airport I was forced to remove my cast completely (with a stanley knife borrowed from a newsagent) whilst the check-in members of staff were very rude, obnoxious and seemed to find the whole situation very funny. These staff members broke easyJet’s regulations which state “Passengers travelling with a plaster cast that has been fitted for less than 48 hours then the cast needs to be split (the split need to run along the entire length of the cast) If the plaster cast been fitted for more than 48 hours there is no requirement for the cast to be split.” (http://www.easyjet.com/EN/Book/regulations.html)
