The Abbaye de la Ferté, dating from 1113, features on the Route des Châteaux of southern Burgundy, and was one of the most important Cistercian abbeys of the time. Sadly the abbey church is no more, but the magnificent abbey palace with its splendid 18th century interior decoration remains intact and its splendours are enjoyed by visitors who take advantage of the guided tours available. The palace is also home to the charming, English speaking owners and their young family.
Situated within the grounds of the Abbaye, yet having its own totally independent access, and an excellent level of privacy, this recently renovated water mill provides a comfortable yet tranquil base from which to enjoy the varied attractions of a holiday in Burgundy. With easy access to the motorway, this location is ideal for visiting interesting towns such as Beaune and Dijon. If you prefer to explore the region at a slower pace, take advantage of the minor roads to visit the many vineyards. Alternatively why not take a day trip into the Morvan hills to enjoy the wooded slopes with their myriad of cycle trails and marked footpaths? Closer to home, the Lac de Laives with its lake beach is within walking distance and provides an excellent opportunity for lake swimming, as well as offering pedalo hire, and bar and restaurant facilities in the summer season.
The well equipped ‘moulin’ interior is light and airy, and would make a perfect choice of holiday accommodation at any time of year. This is a particularly good choice for two couples, as both bedrooms enjoy ensuite facilities. The proximity of the mill stream makes this a tranquil spot and, although well fenced, young children will require supervision. ‘Our’ private sitting out area consists of a large sunny courtyard, but guests are welcome to cross the gated bridge across the stream to enjoy the 25 acres of grounds which surround the Abbaye, landscaped in English parkland style.
Ground Floor: spacious open-plan sitting/dining room with modern fitted kitchen area behind American style bar (no full sized oven but table top style oven/grill); twin bedroom with additional single bed and ensuite shower room/WC. 1st Floor: (via external stone stairs): entrance lobby with WC; double bedroom (160cm wide bed) with ensuite bathroom (bath with shower over). Electric central heating (payable locally). High-sided wooden cot and highchair (on request). Additional cleaning and babysitting on request.
