Description Calypso
Castle is a very unusual house, set on a rocky promontory which juts out
into the sea on the same coast as Skopelos town. It has breathtaking views
for miles up the 'wild' side of the island to the left, the mountains and
monasteries to the right and a panoramic sea view straight ahead towards
the neighbouring island of Alonissos and The National Marine Park of
Greece. The house itself has been designed to look like a medieval castle,
built out of local stone, and appears to have been guarding the nearby
town for centuries. Both owners are local artists and their imagination is
in evidence by the art creations scattered about the property. Near the
entrance gate is a tall iron modern art piece and below the house is a
brick built pyramid. There is plenty of opportunity for outdoor dining
with these stunning views and lots of room for sitting or lounging in the
sun on the terraces which will surround the pool. This private spot is
ideal for nature lovers who want to get away from the hectic pace of life
and really feel like you've gone back in time. With the sun rising in
front of the house, peeking over the mountain tops, the view is truly
inspiring. Calypso Castle is approximately a 20 minute drive from Skopelos
town with about half of it on a winding dirt track leading to the house.
The hillsides are covered with olive groves and herds of goats and the
views are stunning down to the nearby beach of Glysteri with its turquoise
blue waters. This beach is about a 10 minute drive from the house and has
a taverna at the waters' edge which is open from mid-May to mid-September.
Calypso Castle is also ideal for walkers as there are numerous small roads
and trails in the surrounding hillsides. The walk to Glysteri beach is
approximately 20 minutes and about 45 minutes to town. There is also a
small path to the rocks by the sea just below the house which is about a
10 minute walk.
Interior
Description The unusual
decor and design of this fantasy house, have intrigued all who visit
Calypso Castle. The main door opens into the lower floor which serves as
the sittingdining room and open plan kitchen. One of the first things you
notice stepping into this high ceiling room, are the black and white
checked floor tiles and the amazing mural of winged cherubs and clouds
painted on the ceiling. This spacious living area and kitchen has
hand-crafted wooden units and a wood burning antique stove with gas rings.
There is a large dining table, built-in sofa seating under the windows and
several oil lamps and candelabras hanging on the walls which add a touch
from the olden days. The octagonal shape of the building is carried
through to the inside with each sea-facing side boasting a tall window
with a stained glass arch at the top. To the back side of the room is a
wcshower and a stairway just by the front door leads to the upper gallery
which is made from heavy beams of wood and has 2 sleeping areas - one with
double bed and one with two single beds. Both are open towards the living
room underneath. A back door leads out to a pleasant outdoor dining area
with barbeque, sink and dining table. There is also a spacious roof
terrace, accessible by stone steps on the side of the house, which offers
a 180' degree sea view and lots of sun. A private swimming pool, another
bedroom with wcshower room and a separate entrance are exciting additions
for the summer of 2003.
