La Paille Studio, Cappadocia, Turkey

 Exterior Description
These eleven restored troglodyte houses are located in the central region of Cappadocia, within the ancient village of Uçhisar. Here, the first Christians carved churches and dwellings out of the rock to evade invaders. Over a ten-year period, French architect, Jacques Avizou, renovated these magnificent dwellings, situated in the oldest part of Uçhisar. These long forgotten homes, with their vaulted rooms and stone terraces, have been brought back to life. Cappadocia boasts a spectacular landscape of volcanic rock, spires, and needles. Apple, apricot, and mulberry trees flourish in fertile valleys. The climate is temperate, with generally warm, sunny days and cool evenings. Each of the eleven houses enjoys magnificent views and all modern comforts. Architectural and decorative elements include carved lintels, vaulted ceilings, and in-house cisterns. Colorful kilims, carpets, and authentic earthenware grace the homes. The houses are available for rental from April until the end of October. Two airports serve Cappadocia: Kayseri (80 km) has two daily flights to and from Istanbul. Nevsehir (20km) is a newer airport but has only two flights a week in and out of Istanbul. A shuttle service between the airports and Uçhisar is available upon request. A modern, fully equipped medical clinic is located in Nevsehir. Daily maid service is included in the rental price; gardeners tend to the courtyard gardens regularly. A daily breakfast basket (juice, milk, instant coffee, tea, sugar, butter, jam, eggs, cheese, fruit, cookies, and cereal), including fresh bread delivery, is available for $5 USD per person, per day. Shopping and open-air produce markets are available locally. All the houses are located within a maximum of five-minute walking distance from the center of the village of Uçhisar; Nevsehir is a ten-minute drive and offers supermarkets, banks, and ATM machines. Departing on foot from the houses, there are many hikes in the surrounding canyons. There are underground cities such as Derinkuyu and Kaymakli and cave churches to explore. The open-air museum of Göreme is also nearby, as are Pigeon Valley, Red Valley, White Valley, and Zelve. Ancient villages such as Mustafapsa and Ibrahimpasa offer incredible examples of Greek architecture. The pottery center of Avanos and the Sultansazligi Natural Park also make excellent day trips. Rock climbers and serious hikers may want to consider a trip to the Taurus Mountains, 100 km south of Uçhisar. Professional guides are available. In addition, there are meeting facilities for groups available.
